Smoking kills as many people in the developing world as in the developed
world

An article has been published in this week's Lancet by Ezzati and Lopez.
The article estimates the global mortality attributable to smoking in
the year 2000 and concludes that 4.83 million premature deaths in the
world were attributable to smoking (2.41 million in the developing
countries and 2.43 in the developed countries). Not surprisingly, the
leading cause of death was cardiovascular disease (1.69 million deaths).
